Carole Middleton in Orla Kiely

Carole Middleton ‘surprised in Kiely’

Carole Middleton’s choice of dress on her first visit to see her grandson came as a surprise to the designer.

Carole Middleton “delighted” Orla Kiely with her choice of dress earlier this week.

The mother of Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge chose to wear one of the designer’s creations on her first visit to see her grandson George Alexander Louis on Tuesday.

Carole sported a pretty tea dress in a pebble hue from the designer’s Spring/Summer 12 collection to the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s hospital in London, following the prince’s birth on Monday.

Orla had no idea Carole would be sporting the style until she saw the pictures.

“Clearly we didn’t know [she was going to wear it],” Orla revealed to Fashionista.com. “That was a surprise – a good surprise. She looked great – you know she’s so elegant and slim and lovely.”

The Irish designer is also a favourite of Catherine’s. Orla felt incredibly proud to play a small part on a very big day in history.

“I was delighted,” she smiled. “It was a big moment for her – her first grandchild – so I was delighted [she chose one of our dresses].”

The Orla Kiely Dancing Girls Tea Dress sported by Carole features scallop detail, a button through at the front and a detachable belt. She teamed it with a pair of nude heels by Russell & Bromley. Orla teased that more of her royal-approved designs could be seen on Catherine and her son in the future.

“Well you never know,” she said with a sly smile.

“I think [all the royal baby excitement] is very sweet. I bet [Will and Kate] will be very normal [parents]. I bet they’ll try to be as normal as possible.”

Carole was joined by her husband Michael on her first visit to see their grandson. He dressed in a smart navy blazer and joined Carole in proudly smiling to photographers from the steps of the hospital.
